Newcastle's 4-0 thrashing triggers £28m transfer as Premier League rival handed FFP windfall

Eddie Howe's side's domination over Tottenham Hotspur appears to have triggered a hefty move in the summer transfer window

Newcastle United loan star Lewis Hall is set to join the club in a permanent switch this summer following the 4-0 thrashing of Tottenham at St James' Park this afternoon.

The 19-year-old left-back made an appearance off the bench as he replaced Harvey Barnes late on following Alexander Isak's brilliant opener after half an hour of play. That was swiftly followed up by a skilful Anthony Gordon finish which saw him twist and turn around Spurs defender Mickey Van de Ven before firing it past Guglielmo Vicario to double the Magpies' lead less than a minute later.

Isak then bagged his second of the match, latching onto a long ball fired over the top by Bruno Guimaraes before slotting it home and a powerful Fabian Schar header capped off an extraordinary win for manager Eddie Howe's side, who now sit 10 points behind Ange Postecoglou's side in sixth.

Hall originally broke through the Blues' ranks in the final few weeks of last season's torrid campaign which saw him handed opportunities to show his talents by club legend and then-caretaker manager Frank Lampard, including starting each of the four final Premier League matches which helped him win the club's Academy Player of the Year award.

However, with the arrival of current Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino, Hall was seemingly seen as surplus to his requirements with vice-captain Ben Chilwell, Marc Cucurella and makeshift full-back Levi Colwill ahead of him in the pecking order. Since then though, Hall has started just six times under Howe since his loan move started in August, having played just 308 total league minutes behind the likes of Dan Burn.

Despite that, Howe has opened up about the youngster's progression at St James' Park over the last few months and has previously hinted at the likelihood of the star's permanent move happening. Last month, he explained: "In terms of my thinking, I’m preparing for Lewis to be at Newcastle for many years. He was always brought in with a long-term view, not as a short-term signing. He is a long-term signing.

"We have always believed in him and his quality and we have been working really hard with him on his game. He’s a really talented lad. He’s got a couple of things to continue working on as all the players have. I believe in him. My vision for him is he will be at Newcastle for many years."

With that win the Magpies can no longer mathematically finish lower than 14th in the Premier League this season given they're more than 18 points above 15th-placed Brentford. It's believed this triggers the clause that makes Hall's loan deal permanent, meaning United will shell out a reported £28 million plus add-ons in the summer window.
