Arsenal get massive Premier League title boost ahead of Aston Villa after Liverpool loss

Arsenal news as Liverpool lose at home against Crystal Palace ahead of Mikel Arteta's side hosting Aston Villa in possibly season-defining weekend

Arsenal's hopes of winning a first Premier League title in 20 years were dealt a massive boost without even kicking a ball on Sunday. The Gunners were able to watch on ahead of their much-anticipated clash with Aston Villa as Liverpool failed to overcome a stubborn Crystal Palace side at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp's side went behind early thanks to Eberechi Eze's finish at the end of a neat move and were then unable to take advantage of territorial superiority for much of the rest of the game. Palace themselves had a handful of opportunities to extend the lead in Merseyside, most notably Jean-Philippe Mateta's point-blank strike which was somehow saved by Alisson.

Liverpool had their own fair share of chances too with Dean Henderson making several stunning stops himself in the Palace net. Darwin Nunez and Luiz Diaz also went close to finding an equaliser whilst Curtis Jones was unable to convert a one-on-one when clear on goal.

Mohamed Salah was denied late on by a massive block in the Palace defence whilst former Reds defender Nathaniel Clyne also shut off what looked like a certain goal. Under increasing strain Oliver Glasner's Eagles were able to hold out for a possibly title-defining victory.

The result leaves Liverpool in third, where they started the day, but relinquishing the chance to return to the top of the table after Manchester City beat Luton Town 5-1 on Saturday. Arsenal, meanwhile, host Champions League-chasing Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium in the standout fixture of the weekend.

After Liverpool also came undone against Manchester United at Old Trafford seven days ago it leaves the title out of their hands with six weeks remaining. Liverpool themselves have to face Villa before the season comes to an end.
