Tottenham player ratings vs Newcastle - Son and Bissouma struggle with Porro poor before injury
Here are our Tottenham Hotspur player ratings after their heavy defeat at Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon
by Alasdair Gold · football.londonTottenham fell to a 4-0 defeat at Newcastle in the Premier League at St James' Park on Saturday.
Ange Postecoglou made one change to his team to face Eddie Howe's side in the early lunch-time kick-off with Rodrigo Bentancur replacing Pape Matar Sarr after the Uruguayan impressed during the second half of Tottenham's 3-1 victory against Nottingham Forest the previous weekend.
Spurs had the opportunity to put some pressure on Aston Villa if they could have got a positive result at St James' Park on Saturday, with Unai Emery's side making the trip to Arsenal on Sunday. To do so though, the north London outfit had try to succeed at the scene of a horrendous Tottenham performance last season.
Almost 12 months ago, under the stewardship of Cristian Stellini, they fell apart in a dismal 6-1 defeat, with Newcastle scoring three goals within the first nine minutes and netting five within 21. With Postecoglou at the helm, Spurs did gain revenge this season with a 4-1 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Tottenham had some early chances but made a complete mess of things midway through the first half to gift Newcastle two goals within two minutes. First Destiny Udogie was dispossessed by Anthony Gordon and he played in Alexander Isak to rifle in a low shot. Then not long after the kick off, Pedro Porro sliced a clearance back into the Spurs box and it flew straight to Gordon to score. On both occasions Micky van de Ven slipped as he tried to get in a block.
The score became 3-0 after the break with a ball over the top from Bruno Guimaraes into the path of Isak to fire home.
Spurs struggled to find anything in response and a fourth goal came for Newcastle late on. They had been threatening to score from a set piece and they duly got it as Fabian Schar leapt highest to head home.

Here are our Tottenham player ratings after the match:
Guglielmo Vicario
Couldn't get to the first two goals but he perhaps had the chance to come out for the third, albeit out of his box, instead hesitating and giving Isak all the time in the world to pick his spot. Made one smart save in the second half but was nowhere near Schar's header late on. 4
Pedro Porro
Made an important early interception to stop Barnes having a chance in the Spurs box. However, he struggled from then on, looking like he was carrying some sort off injury, and horribly sliced a clearance into his own box for Gordon to score. Came off early in the second half with whatever had been troubling. 3
Cristian Romero
Nowhere to be seen for any of the Newcastle goals and the backline looked leaderless at times. 4
Micky van de Ven
Slipped over at crucial moments for both of Newcastle's first half goals. Tried to get back for the third but couldn't stop Isak. Made a couple of blocks but this was not a good day for the defence or the attack. 4
Destiny Udogie
Dispossessed far too easily by Gordon for Newcastle's opener. Improved after that but it didn't make much difference. 4
Rodrigo Bentancur
Bright in moments but struggled against the strength of the Newcastle midfield's press in others. Came off before the hour mark. 4
Yves Bissouma
Made an early important clearance near the Spurs goalline from a corner but he looked off the pace for long periods as well. Came off with Bentancur and Son. 3
James Maddison
Teed up Werner for an early chance. Tried to make things happen but this was not a game for him against the club he rejected to come to Spurs and the Newcastle fans made sure to remind of that throughout and when he went off late in the game. 4
Brennan Johnson
Looked Spurs' most dangerous attacker in the first half and was switched to the centre after Son went off but got very little service. 4
Son Heung-min
A bad day at the office for the captain. He struggled to hold the ball up in the central role and both goals came, eventually, after he had lost possession. Was taken off after just 58 minutes. 3
Timo Werner
Had three early chances in the game, volleying one over, sending one crashing into Son and then scuffing a shot across the face of goal from Maddison's pull back. He needs to be better in front of goal. 4
Subs
Emerson Royal
Replaced the injured Porro but didn't add much. 4
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
Steadier in the midfield than Bissouma and will wonder what he can do to start a game. 5
Pape Matar Sarr
Brought energy to the midfield in the final half an hour, to no avail. 5
Dejan Kulusevski
Couldn't make in-roads up front and completely lost Schar who peeled away from him to score the fourth. 4
Giovani Lo Celso
Came on the final moments and didn't contribute much. N/A
