Fresh from a fruitful campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 with KL Rahul's Punjab Kings (PBKS), South Africa batter Aiden Markram made his mark in the 2021 edition of the ICC World T20. Successfully exposing himself to the highest standard of the popular sport, Markram ended up hitting a purple patch for the Proteas in the Super 12 phase of the ICC World T20 2021. Markram's batting exploits even unearthed an old tweet of Indian skipper Virat Kohli about the Proteas batter on Saturday.

Not long ago, Indian run-machine Kohli had opted to give a shoutout to Markram for taking the batting charge of the South African side in 2018. "Aiden Markram is a delight to watch!," Kohli had tweeted when Australia toured South Africa for a four-match bilateral Test series. Kohli's tweet resurfaced on the microblogging site when Temba Bavuma-led South Africa locked horns with Eoin Morgan's England in match No.39 of the ICC World T20 2021 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Markram played a perfect second fiddle to an in-form Rassie van der Dussen as the batting duo laid the foundation of a match-winning total against the Morgan-led side. While Van der Dussen smashed an unbeaten 94, middle-order batter Markram slammed a quick-fire 52 off 25 balls to help South Africa post 189-2 in 20 overs. Matching Van der Dussen and Markram's heroics with the ball, pace ace Kagiso Rabada bagged a final over hat-trick to make sure South Africa script a 10-wicket win over Morgan's England in their final group fixture.

Though South Africa came up with an all-round show in their final group game, the Proteas failed to secure their berth for the semi-final stage. England and Australia emerged as the Group 1 winners by taking the top two spots. England bagged the top spot while Aaron Finch’s Australia outclassed South Africa on net run-rate to secure the second spot in Group 1.
