Framing Britney Spears: Justin Timberlake comes under fire after documentary

by · Metro

Justin Timberlake has come under fire from fans for his treatment of Britney Spears in wake of new documentary, Framing Britney Spears.

Despite Britney reportedly having ‘no grudge’ towards her ex-boyfriend, viewers of the film have spoken out, saying that he should be held accountable and asking for a public apology.

The SexyBack singer dated Britney from 1999 to 2002, when they split following reports that Britney had cheated on him.

Justin later fanned these flames with the release of his first solo single Cry Me A River, which tells the story of a man refusing a grovelling apology from an ex.

The subsequent music video featured a Britney lookalike, and in interviews following he would admit to taking the singer’s virginity, bragging ‘OK I did it’ when asked.

Times critic-at-large Wesley Morris explained in the film: ‘The way that people treated her, to be very high school about it, was like she was the school s**t and he was the quarterback.’

This would later play part of a larger media pile-on that culminated in Britney having a nervous breakdown in 2007, resulting in a conservatorship that’s still in place today.

Created by the team behind the #FreeBritney movement, Framing Britney Spears aired on FX in the US last weekend, with stars including Sam Smith, Sarah Jessica Parker and Paramore’s Hayley Williams speaking out in support of the Baby One More Time icon.

But fans also took aim at Britney’s loved ones and family members, saying they should have done more to protect her and her mental health.

Justin Timberlake in particular, was taken aim at, with many saying Britney deserves an apology from him

While the fanbase doesn’t seem so quick to forgive, there is clearly no bad blood between the former couple.

Just three weeks ago, Brit even shared a video on social media of herself dancing to Justin’s song Filthy, tagging him in the post.

A source for the star also said she was looking to move on and doesn’t want any drama heading Justin’s way.

A source told Us Weekly: ‘She would never want her fans to release the hounds on Justin.

‘Hate isn’t going to solve anything, regardless of what happened in the past. Britney does not hold a grudge against Justin over anything he’s said or done.

‘She feels that they were young and in love and both did stupid things when they were together. She was heartbroken when they separated, but it’s not something she dwells on now. She’s happy and happy for him.’

Framing Britney Spears is available on Hulu in the US and is yet to be given a UK release date.
