Apple iPhone 13 Mini still on the table despite lagging sales of iPhone 12 Mini

While the iPhone 12 Mini seems to be dead in the water, that doesn’t mean we’ll never see an iPhone 13 Mini. On the contrary, Apple is making plans to produce and sell four phones in the iPhone 13 family, including the iPhone 13 Mini.

That news comes courtesy of noted leaker Jon Prosser. According to Prosser, his “sources” state that Apple is still planning an iPhone 13 Mini despite the low sales numbers of the iPhone 12 Mini.

Why would Apple continue with a new Mini iPhone when the current iteration has done so poorly? Per Prosser (and many other industry voices), the 2020 iPhone SE deeply ate into sales of the iPhone 12 Mini due to its significantly lower cost. Many customers that wanted a smaller iPhone decided to buy the iPhone SE instead of the 12 Mini, saving them $300 in the process.

It also appears that most people that would buy the iPhone 12 Mini don’t mind the (minimal) downgrade from the Mini’s A14 to the SE’s A13. These consumers may not care about 5G either, making the 12 Mini’s expensive and power-hungry 5G modem superfluous.

Apple has no plans on producing an iPhone SE for 2021, so the iPhone 13 Mini would be competing against fewer devices. As such, Apple may be forecasting stronger sales amongst those that want a smaller phone.

Keep in mind that this news is a rumor and should be treated as such. We won’t know what exactly Apple is cooking up for the iPhone 13 line until later this year.
