CBI serve notice to Bengal Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee’s wife in coal smuggling case

Neither Abhishek nor Rujira present at their Kolkata residence when CBI came knocking

Dubai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday served a notice to Rujira Banerjee, wife of Abhishek Banerjee — Trinamool Congress (TMC) member of parliament and nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee — over reported discrepancies in Rujira’s bank account, which could be trailed to the coal smuggling case that is currently being probed by CBI.

According to a section of the national media in India, Abhishek has been told by CBI to join the coal scam probe. According to reports emerging from Kolkata on Sunday, five CBI officers reached Abhishek Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat, in the southern part of Kolkata, and served a notice to interrogate Rujira at her residence in view of transactions conducted in Rujira’s bank account that could be related to the coal scam that the federal investigative agency has been probing. According to reports, neither Abhishek nor his wife Rujira were available at the residence when the CBI investigators went knocking. The CBI investigative team has sought cooperation from Rujira to question her at her residence on Sunday itself.

Last month, the Enforcement Directorate had raided 12 office and residential premises across West Bengal of people who were connected to Anup Majhi, the prime accused in the coal smuggling case that is believed to have run into several billions of rupees. A Red Corner notice has already been issued by CBI against Majhi who is still at large.
