To commemorate Valentine’s Day, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced on Sunday that they are expecting another baby.

The couple shared their news with a black-and-white picture of themselves resting and laughing under a tree.

The new baby will be the younger brother or sister of their son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, who will turn two on May 6.

“We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother,” said a spokesperson for the couple. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, @sussexroyal, are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.”

The photo, taken by a photographer friend, shows the couple under a tree with Harry barefoot, resting his hand on Meghan’s head as she lay in his lap cradling her bump.

The Duchess of Sussex is wearing “a flowing dress by Carolina Herrera that was first made when she was pregnant with Archie,” according to People.

Because Prince Harry has retained his place as seventh in the line of succession despite the fact that he and Meghan stepped back as senior royals to move to the United States, the new baby will be eighth in line to the throne.

Meghan and Harry, 36, officially stepped down from their roles as working senior royals in March 2020, among other reasons to have a normal family life and in a quest for personal and financial freedom.

They now live in Montecito, California.

Their announcement follows the disclosure late last year by Duchess Meghan, who is 39, that she suffered a miscarriage in July.

"Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few," she wrote in a personal essay published in the New York Times in November.

“The development is a joyful bit of news after a turbulent year in which the couple broke away from the British royal family, started new lives in California and suffered a miscarriage,” that paper reported Sunday.

The news came in the wake of last week’s announcement that Markle had won her case charging Britain’s Mail on Sunday and the Mail Online with privacy and copyright infringement for publishing a private letter she had written to her estranged father, Thomas Markle.

The judge ruled that the publication of the letter was “manifestly excessive and hence unlawful.”

Prince Harry had hinted on different occasions that the couple wanted to expand their family. In the summer of 2019, People wrote, “the Duke of Sussex revealed that he and his wife wanted a ‘maximum’ of two children.”

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “Her Majesty, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales and the entire family are delighted and wish them well.”

The news of Meghan’s pregnancy came after Princess Eugenie, daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, gave birth to a baby boy on February 9.
