Pole-sitter Bottas: "There could be a circumstance that I can win the race"

Valtteri Bottas starts from pole position in the Mexican Grand Prix, with his teammate Lewis Hamilton starting alongside him on the front row. But have Mercedes already planned some team orders?

In an interview with Sky Sports, Valtteri Bottas confirms he will speak to his teammate and form a plan for the start in the Mexican Grand Prix. He hopes there is a circumstance where he can win the race, but knows every single point for Hamilton is crucial in a close battle with Max Verstappen

"I am happy to enjoy this pole and then switch my mind to tomorrow. The first thing I need to focus on is the race start. Do my best and then I need to speak to Lewis about how we can maintain the lead as a team. And how we can keep the Red Bulls behind. Then we see tomorrow. You never know what the race situation will be. I am 100% sure there could be a circumstance that I can win the race and I believe in that and hope for that. But if not, I'll support Lewis and get the maximum points for the team," Bottas said.

A surprise in Mexico

The points haven't been handed out yet, but Mercedes have their hopes up. On paper, the circuit favours Red Bull Racing but Bottas and Hamilton delivered a huge surprise by beating the Red Bulls in Q3. The Finnish driver admits this shock and is prepared for a Red Bull attack.

"Everything came together better than I was expecting. Surprised myself and the team was as well because we seemed a bit off in FP3. Really rewarding for the team because all the changes we made were in the right direction and managed to remain calm and execute the best we can and it worked. We take it, it's a great starting position for tomorrow. It's going to be a long day and especially lap one with two Red Bulls behind with the tow long distance they'll try everything they can," Bottas added.
