Prince Harry and Meghan Markle broke royal protocol with baby scan in unprecedented move

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle broke royal protocol by sharing Prince Archie's scan in their Netflix docuseries, with the couple making an unprecedented move at the time

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle seemingly broke royal protocol when they shared Prince Archie's baby scan with the world.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex got married in May 2018, with them then welcoming their first child a year later. Prince Archie was born on May 6, 2019 at the Portland Hospital in London. Unlike previous royal births, there was no immediate photocall at the hospital steps, with his birth kept on the down-low initially.

But breaking tradition with the lack of photocall wasn't the only way in which the Sussexes seemingly rebelled, with them also making another controversial move - but this time months after Prince Archie's birth.

Usually, within the British Royal Family, details of a royal baby's gender and due date are shielded from public knowledge until the birth. And although this was the case, Meghan and Harry opted to share a picture of their son's baby scan in their Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, which came out in December 2022.

During episode four of the six-episode series, an ultrasound scan image captured during Meghan's pregnancy with Archie was shown on screen, with more intimate pictures of Meghan's growing bump documented during the series too. According to HELLO!, the reveal of Meghan's baby scan marked a first in royal history as such information has never been shared with the public.

Speaking about motherhood in the series, Meghan gushed: "One of the things we connected on very early is [that] you always wanted to be a dad, and I always wanted to be a mum." She went on: "We started journaling the minute we found out we were pregnant. It was just 'Dear baby, we're so excited to meet you one day'. And we'd take little snapshots and stick them in the journal."

Since the arrival of their first child and only son Archie in 2019, the couple went on to welcome a daughter, Princess Lilibet Diana, who was born in June 2021.
