Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh is fast approaching his 100th birthday – and, despite his age, he is ‘in good spirits’ about his hospital stay.

During an interview with Gyles Brandreth when he was 80, the Duke joked that he could not imagine ‘anything worse’ than turning 100.

He said: ‘I can’t imagine anything worse. Bits of me are falling off already.’

So, when is the milestone 100th birthday, and will he get a letter from his wife, Queen Elizabeth II?

His centenary is a cause for celebration – but it remains unseen how coronavirus restrictions will affect the Royal Family’s public and private plans.

A palace aide told The Telegraph in December that Prince Philip wanted ‘nothing to do’ with any 100th birthday ‘fuss’.

The source said: ‘The one person you can guarantee will not want anything to do with it, is the Duke.

‘He’s retired, he’s stepped back, he doesn’t want the fuss. You can’t blame him.’

She was born on April 21, 1926, and will celebrate her 100th birthday on April 21, 2026.

However, usually The Queen celebrates her ‘official’ birthday in June, usually on the second Saturday of the month.

At 94, The Queen is the longest-living and longest-reigning monarch in British history.

Will Prince Philip get a letter from The Queen when he is 100?

When British nationals reach their 100th birthday, Her Majesty The Queen congratulates them with a card.

In the past, she might’ve sent a telegram instead to mark a centenary.

The big question is: will Prince Philip receive an official 100th birthday message from The Queen?

Unfortunately, the answer currently remains unknown.

For us non-royals, if you are a recipient of the state pension, the card will automatically be sent to the address on record, according to gov.uk.

However, everyone else who wants to receive the card needs to apply three weeks prior to the big day.

In addition to British nationals, citizens of countries where The Queen is Head of State and UK Overseas Territories, are also eligible to receive messages.
