Netflix is slated to pose the next big threat to Apple's App Store monopoly

by · Notebookcheck

Netflix has now unveiled the new gaming arm of its subscription service via Android in full. It has big plans for this new kind of content, multi-device access, worldwide availability and child-safety settings included. Now, there are rumors that it may intend to port the same abilities to members on iOS as well.

The respected tech correspondent Mark Gurman now predicts that Netflix intends to integrate games fully into its Android app, rather than providing links to the Play Store listings of the titles in question, which is how it works right now. This would make mobile gaming on Netflix a more intuitive, streamlined and above all familiar experience, particularly as it would mirror that of the Epic Games Store or Google Stadia.

Then again, it might also require a whole panel of investment in and uptake of cloud services on Netflix' part. Furthermore, its implementation might make it even harder for the streaming giant to port its games to iOS. Apple has already made it abundantly clear that it does not want anything like a third-party portal in an app developed for iPhones or iPads.

On the other hand, another group that has run afoul of these App Store policies has managed to elicit a landmark court ruling that may finally impel Apple to relax its normal rules in markets such as the US. Therefore, an updated Netflix app with games on both major mobile platforms could indeed become a possibility one day.

I became a professional writer and editor shortly after graduation. My degrees are in biomedical sciences; however, they led to some experience in the biotech area, which convinced me of its potential to revolutionize our health, environment and lives in general. This developed into an all-consuming interest in more aspects of tech over time: I can never write enough on the latest electronics, gadgets and innovations. My other interests include imaging, astronomy, and streaming all the things. Oh, and coffee.
