Disney has announced that they will be bring IMAX into your home on Disney+. The new format is called IMAX Enhanced, and they will be releasing 13 IMAX Enhanced Marvel films on the streaming service.

So what exactly does IMAX Enhanced mean? It means there will be an expanded aspect ratio of 1:90:1, which shows 26% more of the film image on home screens. On top of that, audio specialist DTS has come on board to deliver its signature sound work to the IMAX versions in streaming. That enhanced sound will be made available at a later time.

The initiative is set to launch on Friday, which the company has designed as Disney+ Day in a promotional push tied to the anniversary of the streaming service’s launch. The slate of Marvel films include Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings, Iron ManGuardians of the GalaxyGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2Captain America: Civil WarDoctor StrangeThor: RagnarokBlack PantherAvengers: Infinity WarAnt-Man and The WaspCaptain MarvelAvengers: Endgame, and Black Widow.

IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said “filmmakers and fans over the past several years have been pressing for a more ‘Imax-ian’ way to present movies in streaming.” He added, “To me, it enhances the notion that streaming and the IMAX theatrical experience are complementary. It’s not either-or. A lot of fans want to experience both.”

He went on to say in the official announcement that they “are giving the fans what they want: the most immersive viewing experience throughout the life of a Marvel Studios film, from exclusive theatrical release to the library at home.”

Michael Paull, president of Disney+ and ESPN+ went on to say, “We’re thrilled to create new value for Marvel fans and audiences on Disney+, and we’re looking forward to offering even more IMAX Enhanced functionality in the future.”

I get what they’re trying to do, but you just can’t bring the epic viewing experience of IMAX to the small screen. IMAX is best experienced in theaters where audiences can actually be wowed by films shot in IMAX. I’m sure some fan will enjoy and appreciate it, though.
