Manchester United: 3 managers who could replace Solskjaer

by · Red Devil Armada

It has been a season of one step forward, two steps back for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United. A 3-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend had provided hope that they could be back on the right track. But a 2-2 draw against Atalanta and a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City since then means that questions will surely be asked about the Norwegian manager’s future at Old Trafford once again.

Solskjaer has been the manager of Manchester United for almost three years now. And while they have had some strong Premier League finishes during that period of time, they are yet to win a trophy.

That must have been the target coming into this season and after signing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho over the summer, many believed that Manchester United were ready to compete for the Premier League title.

11 league games in and it looks like they might struggle to even finish in the top four and they might have very little choice but to make a change in the managerial hot seat if things don’t improve quickly.

Manchester United: 3 managers who could replace Solskjaer

Here are three managers who can be brilliant replacements for Solskjaer, if Manchester United do decide to make a change:

Zinedine Zidane

One of the greatest players in the history of the game, Zidane proved himself as a manager as well during his time at Real Madrid.

During his first stint with the Spanish club, he guided them to a historic three straight UEFA Champions League titles. And while his second stint might not have brought similar amount of success, it was still solid considering the circumstances.

At the moment, he is without a club though, having left Real Madrid at the end of last season. And while he has been linked with the France national team job, there have been some encouraging rumours that he might be open to the Manchester United job as well.

Brendan Rodgers

Over time, Brendan Rodgers has been able to establish himself as one of the top managers in football. Years ago, he came very close to guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title before they let it slip over the last few weeks of the season.

Then he would go on to manage Celtic and enjoyed a brilliant spell there, winning one trophy after another, breaking records and turning the Glasgow giants into a Treble winning machine.

He has done a fantastic job since joining Leicester City as well. Till now, the club have won an FA Cup and a Community Shield under his management and they competed for a Champions League spot in both of his two full seasons with the club despite falling narrowly short both times.

Many consider Rodgers as the favourite to get the Manchester United job if the club do end up parting ways with Solskjaer and it is not difficult to see why.

Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag has had an interesting few years to say the least. He guided Ajax to an unlikely Champions League semi-finals spot a few years back and the Dutch side were moments away from booking their place in the final before conceding a late goal that knocked them out of the competition.

After that, we saw Ajax struggle a couple of years in Europe after several of their best players left the club. But this season, they have made their mark once again, winning all four of their group stage games till now and in dominant fashion.

It goes without saying that Ten Hag is being considered as one of the brightest managers in football once again. And he has been linked with several clubs over the years but has remained at Ajax till now.

Thus, the big question is, will he be open to leaving Ajax and joining Manchester United?
