The Citizens dominated the Premier League contest from start to finish, taking the lead early on through an Eric Bailly own goal before Bernardo Silva made it 2-0 late in the first period.

Solskjaer praised Man City for their performance at Old Trafford before admitting that the 20-time English champions are currently struggling to reach the level set by the top teams in the division.

"They played well, they don't give you opportunities to win the ball off them so praise to them but (our) standards need to be raised," BBC journalist Shamoon Hafez quotes Solskjaer as saying.

"At the moment we are (far off the top teams). The demands on me and the players are going to be high and we have to get back to what we started to look like. We have the players to do that."

Man United will be bidding to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they travel to Watford after the international break.
