Ryan Sessegnon shares what Jose Mourinho said to him before leaving Spurs on loan

Tottenham Hotspur full-back Ryan Sessegnon has shared what Jose Mourinho told him before he left Spurs on loan last October.

The 20-year-old joined Tottenham from Fulham in 2019 to much fanfare, given his superb performances for the West London club in their 2017-18 promotion-winning campaign.

However, his maiden season at Spurs turned out to be fairly difficult, with a hamstring injury keeping him out of action until November and little game time after that.

Sessegnon’s final tally in 2019-20 stood at 12 competitive senior appearances in all competitions, of which six were in the Premier League and three in the Champions League.

The Spurs left-back is currently on loan at Hoffenheim, where he has made 16 appearances in all competitions, registering two goals and two assists.

Sessegnon says he keeps in touch with Mourinho back in London, and shared the Portuguese’s message to him before making the switch.

“His main message [to me] was for me to go and play games,” he told DW.

“He saw it as a good opportunity for me to go out and just play, play, play, bring that experience back and then hopefully I’m ready for when I come back.”

While things didn’t quite go to plan for Sessegnon in his first season at Spurs, his Hoffenheim loan is proving very fruitful.

In November, Hoffenheim fans voted him their Player of the Month with a huge 81 percent of the votes.

Mourinho’s comments to him suggest the youngster definitely has a future in North London, so hopefully he’ll be able to kick on for Spurs next season.
