Jose Mourinho believes ‘excellent’ Spurs player could be back by next week

Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho believes that Sergio Reguilon could be back for Spurs next week.

The 24-year-old has been out for five weeks, having suffered a muscle injury in Spurs’ 3-1 win at Sheffield United last month.

In Reguilon’s absence, Ben Davies has been deputising on the left side of defence.

The North Londoners have won just one of their five Premier League matches in that period, but go into Sunday’s meeting with West Ham having won in midweek.

Spurs ran out 4-1 winners over Wolfsberger in their Europa League last-32 first leg.

And while Reguilon won’t be back for the Hammers clash, Mourinho expects him to return for the second leg against the Austrian outfit.

Asked by football.london about Reguilon and fellow absentee Lo Celso, Mourinho spoke about the Argentine first.

“I don’t know. Not close,” he said. “I think Reguilon next week against Wolfsberger home match.”

Reguilon has been missed, with Davies having been played extensively since his teammate’s injury and looking like he could do with a break.

The Spaniard also offers Spurs more in attack, something that was lacking in previous games, as well as being “excellent defensively”, as pundit Tony Cascarino has previously said.

Reguilon’s return will be a welcome boost for Mourinho as Tottenham look to get their Premier League season back on track and advance in Europe.
