‘A different reality’ – Mourinho opens up on transfer funds at Tottenham

Jose Mourinho has refused to compare his current situation at Tottenham with other clubs in the transfer market, claiming that Spurs were open and honest with him when he joined.

Mourinho has managed some of the biggest financial heavyweights in world football over the years, including Chelsea, Man United and Real Madrid.

However, Spurs have never been famed for splashing the cash in the transfer window, something that Mourinho seemed well aware of before taking the job.

Daniel Levy did sanction a number of new signings last summer, albeit none of them with huge fees attached, including the likes of Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty and Joe Rodon.

Spurs also took Gareth Bale on loan from Real Madrid, Carlos Vinicius on loan from Benfica and Joe Hart on a free transfer.

Speaking before the loss to City, Mourinho claimed that Spurs cannot solve problems by writing a cheque and that he aims to keep working to his best ability without complaining.

He said (Standard): “I’m not going now to try to compare my situation with other clubs because the club was very open with me.

“I knew that I was going to come to a different reality. A big club, no doubt about that, not one second, but a club with a different profile in terms of being or not being a candidate to win competition A or B.

“A club not being able to resolve problems with a cheque. And the club made the possible efforts in the summer to improve the team and I’m not complaining with anything, I just do my work the best I can and that’s it.”
