Kevin Campbell predicts Everton clash against Liverpool

by · The Boot Room

Everton icon Kevin Campbell has delivered his prediction for this weekend’s Merseyside derby, with Carlo Ancelotti’s Toffees locking horns with Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.

The city rivals, who currently sit sixth and seventh in the Premier League table, will face off for the 238th time in their history.

As well as local bragging rights, vital points in the battle for Champions League qualification are at stake.

Both Liverpool and Everton hit the ground running early on in the season and hopes of a Merseyside title challenge were high.

However, things haven’t quite been so good this year, with a slump in form seeing both the Reds and the Toffees drop out of the top four.

Campbell is the last man to score a Merseyside derby winner for Everton at Anfield, back in September 1999, and he told The Sportsman how eager he was for someone else to take the mantle.

“I always used to say I don’t want it and for 21 years Everton haven’t won, so if I say I want to keep it, we might end up winning the game,” he said. “It’s got to finish, come on, it’s about time!

“I think Everton are equipped to win now, we know they can blow hot and cold, but I think they’ll be right up for the game.”

And when it came to his prediction, Campbell said: “I’d love a win, I want a win, we need a win, so let’s go 1-0 Everton like the last time!”

Anfield was a fortress up until just a few weeks ago, when Burnley ran out 1-0 winners at Liverpool and ended their 68-game unbeaten run in the league, spanning almost four years.

Everton may have not won on their rivals’ turf for a long time but this weekend is as good a time as ever.
