Jurgen Klopp's Everton comments backfire as Liverpool suffer humiliating Merseyside derby loss

Jurgen Klopp's comments on Everton have come back to haunt him after Liverpool's humiliating Merseyside derby loss.

The Reds were looking to get their season back on track after some miserable performances in the Premier League as of late.

This is the first time Liverpool have lost four home matches in a row in the Premier League.

And it is Everton's first win at Anfield since 1999, and they fully deserved the result after an impressive display that got off to the perfect start.

Richarlison opened the scoring in the third minute after being put through by James Rodriguez as Ozan Kabak failed to keep up.

The Toffees made sure of the result late on and Dominic Calvert-Lewin was tripped in the area.

Gylfi Sigurdsson netted the resulting penalty that saw Everton draw level with Liverpool on points in the Premier League, with a game in hand.

After losing to Leicester, Klopp poked a bit of cheeky fun at the fact Everton were tussling with them in the table.

He said: "Nobody is happy with being fourth and only having 40 points and (potentially) being level on points with Everton."

But even the Premier League champions would take that - with Liverpool sitting sixth in the table as it stands.

And they could drop even lower, with the likes of Everton, Aston Villa and Tottenham all able to jump above them if they win their games in hand.

After losing the Merseyside derby, Klopp said: “It is [tough to take] but we conceded this early goal which was completely unnecessary and have to defend it better.

"We had to chase the game and did it well creative-wise. We created some chances in the first half and even more in the second half but we did not finish our situations off.

"We made one mistake in the first half and they used it.

"I don't like to talk today about the good stuff because we lose the game and we feel that deeply. I have to use it tomorrow and it is our lifeline to keep going.

"We have to improve on the finishing stuff and then we will win football games."
