Unhappy Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel's brutal explanation for Callum Hudson-Odoi decision

Thomas Tuchel admitted he was unhappy with Callum Hudson-Odoi’s display after ruthlessly substituting the substitute in Chelsea ’s 1-1 draw at Southampton.

With Chelsea trailing at half-time Hudson-Odoi entered the fray in attack with Tammy Abraham replaced.

Instead of turning to Olivier Giroud as a direct replacement Hudson-Odoi was called upon.

However, less than 30 minutes later - with the scores level after Mason Mount’s equaliser from the penalty spot - Hudson-Odoi found himself brutally subbed off, with Hakim Ziyech on for the final quarter of an hour.

There was no sign of any injury to the England international, who, frustrated, kicked a water bottle as he made his way into the stands.

And Tuchel admitted post-game that he was far from pleased with Hudson-Odoi’s attitude and that his departure was purely performance related.

He told BT Sport: “With Hudson-Odoi, I was not happy with the attitude and energy.

“We decided to take him off again. We demand a lot and 100 per cent. I felt he was not right in the shape and he could not help us.

“It's hard for the players but tomorrow it will be forgotten. He has all possibilities to start against Atletico.”

He also told beIN Sports: "I was not happy with his body language or his counter pressing.

"And that's why I had the feeling that he's not ready to give what I wanted from him."

Tuchel also admitted that there was no recurrence of Abraham’s ankle issue - after he limped off against Newcastle in midweek - and that his half-time exit was also down to a struggle to make his mark on proceedings.

“It was not from his injury. It was hard for him to show his quality we was not happy with the last 20 metres.

"Tammy could not put his stamp on this game and we changed formation.”

And in a damning critique of his side's attacking play, Tuchel admitted that while he was happy with how the Blues controlled the game, he was far from pleased with the opportunities they let slip away to win the match.

"My frustration was the last 20 metres. We had so many opportunities, half chances.

"I had the feeling in our own attacks it was bad choices. Balls over hit, balls under hit. I missed the aggressiveness to finish the game. The last 20 metres was not good enough."
