Thomas Tuchel explains why Callum Hudson-Odoi was substituted

Thomas Tuchel has been warned that Callum Hudson-Odoi is unlikely to forget being substituted less than half an hour after coming on as a substitute for Chelsea at Southampton.

That's the verdict of former Arsenal defender Martin Keown after Tuchel took the decision to substitute Hudson-Odoi during the second half of the game at St Mary's, having only introduced the 20-year-old at half time in the 1-1 draw.

After the game, Tuchel claimed that Hudson-Odoi's attitude was not right, adding that he was not impressed with his energy or counter-pressing after bringing him on at half time.

The German added that the decision would be forgotten tomorrow as Hudson-Odoi and Chelsea turn their attention to facing Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.

But Keown has a difference of opinion, adding that he feels Tuchel needs to be careful with how he treats his players as he looks to get to know them and learn his best system at Chelsea, having only taken charge last month.

“I did the live game for the BBC against Barnsley in the FA Cup and I was really close to the manager and he was really quite scathing of his players," he said, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He is saying that it will be forgotten tomorrow, I don’t think the player will forget it. It is humiliating to be taken off in that situation and I don’t actually feel he deserved it.

“Looking at it, I thought it might actually be Werner who would have been hooked, they were trying to get players to get in behind the Southampton defence and he looked quite threatening when he came on.

“It is a difference of opinion, and let’s hope the player gets plenty of opportunities. But you are still looking for all the pieces of that jigsaw puzzle to be put together.

“It didn’t seem that Frank Lampard could do that, and Tuchel now is also having problems trying to find his best rhythm and best team.”
