Danny Murphy and Martin Keown have criticised Thomas Tuchel after the Chelsea boss hauled off Callum Hudson-Odoi in Saturday’s draw against Southampton and then publicly slammed his performance.

Tuchel, who replaced Frank Lampard as Blues manager last month, substituted Hudson-Odoi just 31 minutes after the winger came on in the 1-1 draw with Southampton.

Hudson-Odoi replaced Tammy Abraham at half-time when the Blues were 1-0 down but was replaced himself after Chelsea equalised, with Tuchel criticising his attitude.

Tuchel said: ‘Maybe it is even unfair, but it was my feeling. I was not happy with his attitude, energy and counter-pressing.’

Responding to the incident, Murphy told BBC’s Match of the Day: ‘Callum made a difference when he came on. He got them back in the game in some ways.

‘He was running in behind and giving Southampton a different problem. They didn’t cope with him at times.

‘I was flabbergasted to be honest with you when he brought him off and then publicly criticised him.

‘That’s not the way to go for me. When you’re at a new club and you’re trying to inspire and influence players, you need to be careful when you choose your victims.

‘He’s a young lad who’s done well for him recently. It’s not just the lad who needs to recover now, it’s his team-mates.’

Arsenal legend Keown, meanwhile, said: ‘The indignity… it’s a shame as a player. You’ve got to keep a lid on that. I think he [Tuchel] might regret what he did.’

Explaining his decision to take off Hudson-Odoi, Tuchel added: ‘I took him off and we demand 100%, I feel he is not in the right shape to help us.

‘It was a hard decision but tomorrow it is forgotten and he has all possibilities to start against Atletico Madrid [in the Champions League on Tuesday].

‘Everyone has to understand that I take decisions to win games and there is no problem that he makes mistakes and has a bad game, but we can’t lack energy even 10% or 5%.

‘He knows what I demand from him and when he doesn’t reach this level, it’s a hard decision.’

Chelsea’s draw with Southampton leaves them fourth in the Premier League table on 43 points from 25 matches.
