Jan. 6 Capitol riot committee issues new subpoenas to ex-Trump aides

The House Jan. 6 Select Committee issued six new subpoenas to associates of former President Donald Trump on Monday. 

The subpoenas include former Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien, senior adviser Jason Miller, national executive assistant Angela McCallum, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, former NYPD commissioner and Trump ally Bernard Kerik and attorney John Eastman. 

The committee said it is calling for records and testimony from witnesses and those connected with the “war room” held at the Willard hotel in the days leading up to the “Stop the Steal” rally before the riot at the Capitol. 

“In the days before the January 6th attack, the former President’s closest allies and advisors drove a campaign of misinformation about the election and planned ways to stop the count of Electoral College votes,” Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) said in a statement. 

Kerik reportedly attended a Jan. 5 meeting in relation to efforts to attempt to disrupt the certification Joe Biden as winner of the election and paid for rooms at the Willard hotel. And Eastman crafted a memo six-step memo arguing that the vice president has the authority to reject the election results — a theory that has been rejected by legal experts. 

All of those subpoenaed have been directed to turn over documents in the days leading up to Thanksgiving and have been called to appear before the panel for a deposition in December.

The House voted last month to hold longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon in contempt after he refused to comply with his subpoena from the panel investigating the origins of the violent attack. Trump himself is fighting the probe in court.

The panel is working with other close Trump advisers to gain testimony, including former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and administration aides Kashyap Patel and Dan Scavino. Bannon refused to comply with his subpoena.
