Perez gave Verstappen slipstream: "It didn't work"

by · GPblog.com

Sergio Perez appeared disappointed in front of the camera after the qualifying session for the Grand Prix of Mexico. The 31-year-old had hoped to be on the front row of the grid alongside Max Verstappen, but he was disappointed on Saturday.

Perez drove the fourth time, while Verstappen couldn't get any further than a P3. In the final run, the Mexican suddenly saw Yuki Tsunoda leave the asphalt. Did that distract Perez? "Yuki was just ahead. I was just a bit too close and I lost a bit too much already from.. you know because we go through the high speed... its pretty difficult you go through there when you have a close car ahead of you," Perez said in a conversation with Sky Sports.

Perez had hoped for more

He thinks there could have been more in the RB16B. "I could have been a couple of tenths quicker but Mercedes was a bit too quick today," said Perez, who tried to give Verstappen another slipstream. "It didn't work but tomorrow it's a pretty long race. We are disappointed because we looked strong in practice. But Merceds turned things on they were really quick."
