Antonio Conte outlined his footballing philosophy in his pre-match programme notes ahead of his first game in charge of Tottenham, expressing his desire to get the side playing attractive football.

It did not prove to be the smooth start that Conte and his coaching staff would have been hoping for in their first game in charge against Vitesse Arnhem.

In the end, the Lilywhites were able to hold on to a narrow 3-2 win but things could have been quite different had Hugo Lloris not pulled off a couple of brilliant saves.

Conte described his first game in charge of the Lilywhites as a ‘crazy’ encounter and admitted that there is room for improvement.

If the 52-year-old had any illusions about the difficulty of the task that lies ahead for him, he would have certainly been disabused of that notion yesterday as he witnessed Spurs giving away some cheap goals.

Ahead of the Europa Conference League clash, the Italian told Tottenham fans what to expect from the side under his stewardship.

Conte wrote in his matchday programme notes (via Football.London): “People always ask about a coach’s philosophy and mine is simple; work hard to be competitive and to try to win.

“It is also important to have a balanced team and play good football for the supporters.

“That means you must have possession and think of ways to attack and score goals, while playing attractive football with passion.

“We want you to feel our passion, to connect with this team and to enjoy our moments together.”

It is evident that ‘passion’ is Conte’s go-to buzzword and it is a phrase that a lot of players who played under the Italian use to describe him.

That was perhaps the main ingredient that was lacking during Nuno’s short time at the club, with the fans (and even some players) looking apathetic.
