A Department for Work and Pensions Personal Independent Payment rule change means claimants could land £800. The new standard and enhanced payment rates that have come into effect this month have been published by the DWP.

For daily living tasks the standard rate is now £72.65 (up from £68.10 a week) and the enhanced rate is now £108.55 (up from £101.75 a week). For mobility tasks, the standard rate is now £28.70 (up from £26.90 a week) and the enhanced rate has risen to £75.75 (up from £71 a week).

The enhanced rate of the mobility component also gives people the option of getting a Motability vehicle instead of cash. The changes mean those entitled to the full rate can now receive up to £184.30 a week, which translates to around £798.63 a month.

PIP is usually paid every four weeks. The decision about whether you are entitled to the daily living component, and if so at what rate, is based on the number of points you score in total for a range of activities which can include preparing food and taking nutrition.

Other activities and tasks analysed include managing therapy or monitoring a health condition, washing and bathing, managing toilet needs or incontinence, dressing and undressing, communicating verbally, reading and understanding signs, symbols and words and engaging with other people face-to-face.

Others are making budgeting decisions. Each of these activities is divided into a number of point scoring descriptors. To get an award of the daily living component, you need to score 8 points for the standard rate and 12 points for the enhanced rate.

You can score points in the PIP test even if there are some days when you can carry out an activity. The easiest way to claim is to phone the PIP helpline. Claimants must then fill in a form, after which they’ll then undergo an assessment.
