Twenty-two flights headed towards Delhi were diverted on Saturday due to inclement weather. A sudden spell of rain lashed parts of the national capital in the afternoon, bringing respite from the heat.

The flights which were diverted from Delhi include nine from IndiGo, three from Vistara, eight from Air India and one each from Air India Express and Saudia.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said an active western disturbance over northwest India was causing the rains in the city. It has also forecast light rain accompanied by gusty winds on Sunday.

Delhi will likely witness generally cloudy skies on Sunday along with light showers accompanied by winds with speeds reaching 35 to 40 kmph, said the IMD.

The weather department issued an advisory for thunderstorms and lightning over the national capital region and asked people to stay indoors. It also advised people to close windows and doors and avoid travelling.

Additionally, the advisory recommended seeking safe shelters and avoiding taking shelter under trees.
