Arvind Kejriwal gets no relief from SC against ED arrest in excise policy case, next hearing on April 29

The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of a petition filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenging his arrest and subsequent remand by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an excise policy case. The apex court issued a notice on Kejriwal’s plea and scheduled the next hearing for April 29, 2024.

Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, has approached the Supreme Court seeking relief from his arrest and detention by the Enforcement Directorate in a case related to the excise policy. Kejriwal’s plea asserts that his arrest was unjustified and seeks the apex court’s intervention to quash the charges against him.

Legal battle intensifies

In a crucial development for Arvind Kejriwal, the Supreme Court heard a petition challenging the decision of the High Court that upheld his arrest and remand. The apex court issued a notice on Kejriwal’s plea, demanding a response from the ED before April 24, 2024. Additionally, another hearing on Kejriwal’s judicial custody extension will take place in the Rouse Avenue Court.

Video conference hearing anticipated

During the upcoming proceedings, Arvind Kejriwal is expected to attend the hearing via video conferencing. This arrangement allows for his participation in the legal proceedings while in custody.

Kejriwal’s allegations

Arvind Kejriwal has vehemently contested his arrest and detention in the money laundering case related to the liquor scam. His petition before the Supreme Court alleges a deliberate attack on democratic principles and political opponents by the Enforcement Directorate. Kejriwal asserts that there is no substantial evidence linking him to any wrongdoing and argues that his arrest is politically motivated.

High-stakes meeting at Tihar Jail

Meanwhile, a crucial meeting between Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann took place at Tihar Jail today. This meeting followed extensive deliberations and discussions between the officials of Punjab Police and Tihar Jail authorities regarding the security protocols and logistical arrangements for the meeting.

BJP demands resignation

On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its demand for Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation, accusing him of creating a crisis in Delhi due to his obstinacy. The BJP alleges that Kejriwal harbors ambitions of imposing President’s rule in Delhi.

Legal proceedings against Manish Sisodia

In a separate development, the bail hearing for Manish Sisodia, the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi and another accused in the liquor scam case, is scheduled for today. Additionally, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is expected to present K. Kavita, a key witness, in the Rouse Avenue Court. The CBI team is seeking answers to several crucial questions from K. Kavita, and their findings may influence the decision regarding Manish Sisodia’s remand extension.
