The Reds manager Jurgen Klopp made four changes, as he recalled Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Fabinho, Joel Matip and Diogo Jota, who joined Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in a front three.

The Hammers had a perfect start after going ahead in the fourth minute from a corner situation after Angelo Ogbonna challenged for the ball with goalkeeper Alisson at the near post but the Brazilian missed the flight of the ball under pressure and conceded an own goal.

West Ham were soaking up the pressure after that, not giving Liverpool chances and it took a magnificent free-kick from Trent Alexander-Arnold to level matters just before the half-time break after the England wing-back curled his strike around the wall on the edge of the box and into the top corner.

David Moyes' troops had a chance to restore their lead on the stroke of half-time after Said Benrahma threaded a square pass towards Michail Antonio, who was clear on goal but Virgil Van Dijk made crucial tackle and the sides went to the half-time interval level pegging.

The hosts almost had another perfect start early in the second stanza from a corner again as Craig Dawson connected well with the cross but his effort came off the crossbar.

Mane came close to giving Klopp's charges the lead just two minutes later after a volleyed cross by Andrew Robertson with a well drilled strike that produced a great save out of shot-stopper Lukasz Fabianski.

Liverpool were playing a high line and they were punished in the 67th minute after Pablo Fornals went through on goal from Jarrod Bowen's through ball on a counter-attack and fired a low strike past Alisson.

The Reds were struggling to deal with corner-kicks as Kurt Zouma made it 3-1 for Moyes' men with a header over the diving Alisson at the back post from Bowen's corner.

Klopp immediately brought on Divock Origi in place of Jota for fresh legs upfront and Origi pulled a goal back seven minutes before time with a bouncing half-volley after a good turn inside the box.

Mane had a glorious chance to snatch the equaliser for the visitors in stoppage time after he was picked out by Alexander-Arnold with a free-kick at the back post, but his effort missed narrowly wide as the Hammers held on to climb above Liverpool in third place.
