Man City get second massive Premier League title boost after Arsenal and Liverpool results

Manchester City news as both Arsenal and Liverpool falter to give Pep Guardiola's side an enormous advantage in the Premier League title race

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester City's perfect weekend was capped off after Arsenal followed up Liverpool's surprise 1-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace with a loss of their own.

Heading into the game with the knowledge that Jurgen Klopp's side had slipped up in the earlier Sunday after kick-off, the Gunners were unable to take advantage.

Following an impressive first half that saw Emi Martinez's goal peppered with shots, Arsenal were unable to match their performance levels and allowed Unai Emery's side back into the game. A strong reaction after the break brought Villa into the game before a quickfire double ultimately sealed the fate.

Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins scored within two minutes of each other to round off a 2-0 away win for Villa as City remained top of the league in the wake of their 5-1 demolition of Luton Town. It means that with six games to go it is back in Pep Guardiola's hands to win an unprecedented fourth league title in a row.

City themselves got the better of Villa at the Etihad Stadium 10 days ago with a crushing 4-1 win. They now hold a two-point lead over their title rivals with just over one month left to go.

Liverpool were the first side to relinquish their advantage. Eberechi Eze's early goal on Merseyside was the only one of the game despite numerous opportunities for Mohammed Salah and Co. Curtis Jones missed a gilt-edged chance as part of a second-half onslaught but even then the Reds had Alisson to thank for not going further behind.

Palace nearly walked away with an even more remarkable result after Jean-Philippe Mateta's close-range shot was somehow diverted wide. It comes just a week after they also failed to deliver on territorial superiority at Old Trafford against Manchester United.
