Former MI captain Rohit Sharma showcased his class against CSK with his 8th T20 hundred in the IPL 2024 match in Mumbai, captivated the audience and sent a strong message ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. On a day when the Wankhede Stadium was buzzing with anticipation, Rohit Sharma batted with intent to hit his first fifty of the season and then converted it into a three-figure mark. Rohit hit his century in 61 balls on the day. Rohit walked out to bat with Ishan Kishan as MI were chasing a formidable target of 207 runs set by CSK, thanks to a powerful performance by MS Dhoni and Shivam Dube, who propelled their team to 206 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite losing two wickets, MI's chase was characterised by Rohit's stability in the crease. Rohit reached his century with a boundary off his 61st delivery in the final over of the innings.

Rohit Sharma, known for his ability to anchor and accelerate an innings, took the challenge head-on. He raced to a rapid fifty off just 30 balls, a slightly cautious approach compared to his usual aggressive style, indicating his adaptability and strategic insight. His partnership with Ishan Kishan laid a solid foundation for MI,. This marked only his second century in the competition, the first being an unbeaten 109 against KKR back in 2012. Despite Rohit's impressive unbeaten score of 105 from 63 balls, Mumbai Indians fell short by 20 runs in their pursuit of 207 runs, rendering his efforts futile.

MI LOSE DESPITE ROHIT HUNDRED

Mumbai will be disappointed with that loss as they let things slip after being in a dominant position both with the bat and earlier with the ball as well. They should have restricted Chennai to about 190 runs but conceded 15 runs or so more and then with the bat, they left too many runs for the death overs. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan put on 70 runs before Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav got out in the space of 3 deliveries. Rohit went on to score a half-century and Tilak Varma reignited the chase with a quickfire cameo. However, Hardik Pandya pushed himself up the order and couldn't get going at all and got out before Tim David hit a couple of sixes and went back as well. Rohit found it difficult to time the ball in the final few overs.

Chennai were under the pump inside the Powerplay as the opening pair of Mumbai were doing some real damage. However, the introduction of Matheesha Pathirana in the 8th over turned things around in the blink of an eye as he got two big wickets in his first over and got his side back in the game. Chennai once again let another partnership build before Ruturaj Gaikwad brought Pathirana in and he yet again delivered with a wicket. This was well backed up by the likes of Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande who went for just 5 runs combined in their final overs.
