Rob McElhenney's two-word reaction sums up Wrexham promotion despite agony of missing out

Rob McElhenney has missed out on seeing Wrexham AFC gain promotion to League One after their emphatic 6-0 win over Forest Green, but took to social media to share his delight.

The team had not been expected to gain promotion this weekend, as they needed both Barrow and MK Dons to drop points against teams below them in the league, but with both surprisingly losing it meant a win would seal promotion at the first time of asking - and Phil Parkinson's men obliged.

Wrexham have now gained promotions in back-to-back seasons, the first team to do so in the English football since Southampton had gone from League One to the Premier League in 2010 to 2012.

The accomplishment is one that will be celebrated throughout North Wales on Saturday evening, but one that McElhenney and his co-owner Ryan Reynolds will not able to attend - after not travelling for the game

During the game, McElhenney tweeted his regret on not being able to make it - realising he was about to miss out on the day of the historic accomplishment.

He responded to one tweet from Bryn Law who expressed regret about missing the game, writing: "Me too", while responding to one fan who tweeted: "No Rob or Ryan today," as he wrote back: "Killing me".

Rob McElhenney did not make it to the game, with Wrexham not seen as likely to be promoted before results fell their way

After 16 years away from the Football League, last season's promotion saw them join League Two were they had been among the favourites to gain promotion. After a difficult start, losing 5-3 to MK Dons in the season opener - Wrexham went on a seven-game unbeaten run and quickly found themselves back towards the top of the table.

Star striker Paul Mullin had proved his worth in the league, being second only behind his old rival McAuley Langstaff at Notts County for top scorer in the league.

Reynolds has yet to tweet or post anything on their social media platforms since the promotion was confirmed, but McElhenney kept him simple posting: "No words," with a love heart emoji.

The two are expected to return to Wales in the coming days as the team will plan to celebrate their promotion to League One in their first season back in the EFL, and prepare for life one step closer to the Premier League.

Wrexham could still be promoted as champions, but that looks to be an unlikely outcome with them needing current leaders Stockport County to fail to win any of their last three games this season.
