Ryan Reynolds in tears as he celebrates 'ride of his life' Wrexham's promotion to League One

Wrexham confirmed back-to-back promotions with a huge 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers and Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are reacting emotionally

Ryan Reynolds has paid tribute to Wrexham after the team achieved back-to-back promotions from the National League into League One.

Reynolds, 47, watched from afar as the Welsh club sealed promotion with a thumping 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday. A Paul Mullin brace plus goals from Elliot Lee, Jack Marriott, Ryan Barnett and a Ryan Inniss own goal gave them the dominant victory.

Promotion has been secured with two games to spare after Barrow and MK Dons lost their games this weekend. Wrexham also have an outside chance of winning the League Two title should Stockport County slip up above them, who also secured promotion with a win on Saturday.

But regardless of whether they make it consecutive league titles, the club has already achieved its ultimate goal for the season: to make it a brief stay back in the fourth tier. As Reynolds has dubbed it on social media: "This is the ride of our lives."

"A few years ago, if you told me I would be crying tears of joy over a football match taking place in North Wales, you would be Rob McElhenney," he posted on X, formerly Twitter. "Congrats to Wrexham and to my co-chairman in crime."

Reynolds added: "Double up the town! This is the ride of our lives," before punctuating the post with a Welsh flag emoji.

After reacting to the match live throughout, McElhenney had difficulty summing up his emotions immediately after the full-time whistle. "No words," he posted on X, adding a red heart. He was also not in attendance for the momentous occasion.

The actor made that known while interacting with commentator and Wrexham fan Bryn Law. He shared his regrets at missing the match due to work commitments, and McElhenney concurred: "Me too."

In response to another fan acknowledging that neither co-owner was at the Racecourse Ground for the match, he added: "Killing me". That was presumably due to the unlikely nature promotion would be sealed this weekend, as McElhenney alluded to in a post about watching the table.

Wrexham needed to win their match first, ultimately a formality against rock-bottom Forest Green. But they also required games at Gillingham and Milton Keynes to go in their favour, as Barrow and MK Dons needed to drop points against Gillingham and Mansfield Town.

Those chances took a blow early on as Max Dean fired MK Dons in front after 12 minutes. But within five minutes, Wrexham's fortunes started to turn as Lee gave them the lead. And then Barrow's George Ray saw red to reduce the promotion hopefuls to ten men a minute before Mullin doubled Wrexham's lead.

Before half-time, Gillingham eventually took the lead in the third minute of stoppage time, and Mansfield equalised to put Wrexham some 45 minutes away from promotion. Both teams then continued to play their part in proceedings, with Gillingham scoring another two for a 3-0 win and Mansfield adding three goals to ensure a 4-1 victory.
